Solution

Guided, companion-led workouts, anchored by a personalized animated avatar that evolves with the user's progress.

A social layer that lets friends see each other's workout status and nudge each other to stay consistent.

Signaling competency by marking consistency with Streaks, and progress tracker for major muscles targeted through each workout.

Overview

What does the research say about building a strength training habit?

I sifted through academic journals and scientific studies on habit formation and training consistency.

Key Insight

Two habit thresholds determine long-term consistency: week 6 and week 17. Crossing each significantly increases the likelihood of sticking with it long-term.

Key Insight

Early social support plus sustained personal coaching drives stronger consistency than either alone.

Key Insight

The needs that drive satisfaction past both milestones: social support, progress awareness, autonomy, and competency.

Next, I turned to my community to see how these findings played out in practice.

5 user interviews, each 60 minutes long

26-32 year old ndividuals across a wide range of strength training experience, from a complete non-user to a former collegiate track athlete.

3 product principles became clear to me.

1) Competency and Control: Knowing exactly what to do and when to do it. No guesswork.

2) Social accountability: A social layer that helps people show up and show out.

3) Extrinsic-to-intrinsic Mindset Shift: Encouraging strength training for personal growth, strength, and goals rather than comparison/competition with others.

I built medium-fidelity wireframes to see how it all played out together.

How well does the final product perform?

I performed a usability test on my high-fidelity prototype with 5 participants, asking them to complete 4 tasks critical to product performance.
